Next at BUTTER
The emphasis of our last exhibition, "NON NATIVE", was on place and it's influence on the artists and their work. The theme for our next exhibition, "nude" will focus on the body as location - the up close and personal investigation of skin, surface and form.

Panel Discussion - March 20, 2pm

Guest moderators, Vince Carducci and renee c. hoogland will lead exhibiting artists Kyohei Abe, Chido Johnson, Katie Phillips and Amy Sacksteder in discussion about their influences and inspirations taken from their hometowns and being an artist in Metro Detroit today.
renee c. hoogland is Associate Professor of English at Wayne State University and widely published author of feminist and queer theory, psychoanalysis, popular culture and Anglo-American literature.
Vince Carducci edits the blog Motown Review of Art. His articles on the arts, culture, and politics have been published in many venues, from online zines and blogs to academic journals and books. He currently teaches liberal arts at the College for Creative Studies and sociology at Oakland University. He is also a 2010 Kresge Fellow in the Literary Arts.

NON NATIVE opens March 5, 7-10pm


Please join us for the opening reception of
"NON NATIVE" - March 5, 2011 from 7-10pm.
NON-NATIVE brings together a group of four Non-Michiganders who are currently living and working in the Metro-Detroit area. The exhibition highlights the role community and sense of place plays in work that addresses varying cultures, techniques, traditions and methods.
Participating artists include Kyohei Abe (Anjo-shi, Aichi Japan/Ferndale), Chido Johnson (Nyadiri, Zimbabwe, Africa/Detroit), Katie Phillips (Louisville, KY/Bloomfield Hills), and Amy Sacksteder (Augusta, GA/Ypsilanti).
In conjunction with the exhibit, a panel discussion with the artists will be held on March 20 at 2pm. Guest moderators, Vince Carducci and renee c. hoogland will lead the discussion.
Upcoming Exhibition
Our previous exhibition “Bigger Butter” introduced our two new partners, Jacklyn Brickman and Elizabeth Boyd Hartmann. Continuing on the theme of growth and community, the upcoming exhibit “Non Native” welcomes four artists born outside of Michigan who have established themselves in the Metro Detroit area.

-A COMMUNITY BASED PROJECT BY CHIDO JOHNSON
We're hosting an information session at Butter Projects presented by Chido Johnson. Come learn how to make a wire car for you to cruise on Woodward in front of the DIA. The cars will be documented cruising to the formation of Detroit's version of Soul-Train, the Scene and will be shown during the Art X Kresge Fellows exhibit in April. Each wire car manufacturer will receive a copy of the video and raw footage of their moment in the cruise.

Bread and Butter Winter Art & Craft Fair

We are pleased to host our first art & craft fair on Saturday, December 11, from 11am – 7pm. Free and open to the public.
Bread & Butter” is the first of a new series of events that will be held in part to support BUTTER Projects.
This one day event will feature over 20 artists & crafters selling a wide array of handmade items such as fine art, ceramics, clothing and jewelry in addition to goods such as local honey, homemade elderberry syrup, soaps, lotions and much more! Gifts for everyone on your list at prices for any budget. Cash or check accepted.
Participating vendors include artists: Nate Brent, Jacklyn Brickman, John Charnota, Mary Fortuna, Kelly Frank, Elizabeth Boyd Hartmann, Jessica Harvey, Marie Torbensdatter Hermann, Laith Karmo, Benjamin Teague, Alison Wong and local labels including: bX ceramics, Chain Chain Chained, The Crafty Moms, Elderberry Heaven, Larson Honey and Wound Menswear. Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Metalsmithing department will also have a table featuring handcrafted jewelry.
